- we’ve never worn that still have tags,
- we’ve worn but realized it was the biggest fashion mistake for our body type,
- it’s now either too big or too small and d) we just plain don’t like it anymore.
What would you say to $200 in a mere two months with minimal effort?
I’m sure we can all agree it would be a resounding – Hell yes!
That’s what I’ve made by selling items through clothing consignment, well, $193.15 to be precise. Sure, I could have tried to sell the items on my own but have you tried Kijiji or EBay? I’ve tried and it can be quite the experience. You either have to sell your first born, put up with strange people asking you bizarre questions, or involve yourself in some shameless self-promotion to get things sold.
All totalled, I sold 13 items to bring in $193.15, extra money that will go to my severe fashion overspend from December. I started my consignment adventure back in October , dropped off additional items in November and checked in once by phone – not a bad payoff for 45 minutes work.
Come on, you could have sold that for more!
Maybe I could have but it would have taken a lot more effort.
It’s interesting to see the prices the consignment shop sells items for and what you actually receive. For example, I sold a simple Coach Leather hobo purse, they listed for $99.99 and I received $39.99. Realistically, I would never be able to sell the items on my own at their prices, I’m happy with the 40% I received, it would all be dumped into a donate bin somewhere anyways.
TIP for earning more at consignment: Keep your clothes in good shape, odor-free and make sure any tears and/or buttons are repaired before taking them in. This will increase the value that the consignment shop can sell for and make your items more appealing to shoppers! The saleswoman in the shop told me this was the key reason most of my items sold and sold quickly because they were well taken care of.
When consigning, think of yourself as the shopper and ask “Would I buy this item?”
Next up, spring item drop off in February, here’s to a bigger pay off!
