I love summer. I love being outdoors. I love cycling and soaking up the beautiful sunny weather and blue skies. Cycling is my therapy; it gives me time to be alone with my inner “self” and to sort out the craziness I’ve endured for the week. It’s also a great builder of determination, will power and endurance. The biggest benefit I get from cycling is that it distracts me from spending. My average ride usually keeps me out for at least an hour and I’m so amped up when I get back I want to stay outside and can’t stand sitting in front of a computer. Online shopping all but disappears from my mind.
This weekend I took things a step further, I kept myself away from my phone and it was off for most of the weekend. Do you know what that’s like? To be not checking your phone constantly or posting every minute of whatever you do somewhere online. It’s ahmazing!
Did you know that the average person checks their phone every 6 minutes and over 150 times a day? Yea. We.Need.Help.
Did I do any spending this weekend? Yes, but not on the “stuff” that consumes me like fashion does. I bought necessities (for the most part); groceries, wine to make sangria, and suntan lotion. Mysteriously the suntan lotion I thought I had in February vanished….it may have been expired and I threw it out. Oh well. At least it was on sale.

Not only do I love cycling but I also love lounging in the backyard with a floppy hat, sunglasses, a great book and something cool to drink. This weekend was a sangria type of weekend, mostly because I’ve had some oranges and lemons in the fridge for a bit longer than usual. It’s a great way to use up citrus fruits that would otherwise be tossed after a few weeks.
I decided to buy a budget friendly bottle of wine at $8.95 (Gato Negro Cab Sauv), grabbed some ginger ale on sale and used up the oranges and lemons in the fridge. Here is the recipe I used:
1 X 750mL bottle of red – merlot, cab sauvignon, rioja all work best
2 X 350mL cans of ginger ale
½ an orange
½ a lemon
1/3 cup frozen raspberries or other frozen fruit of your choice
You can also add a bit of brandy and some sugar but since I’m on a healthy diet, I nixed both. To mix, it’s super simple. Take a pitcher, put in the sliced orange and lemon (be sure to squeeze the juice out) and frozen raspberries, add the bottle of wine, add cans of ginger ale, stir and you are done! If you can, let it sit in the fridge for a few hours before serving, that way the flavours have a chance to mix and mingle.
It’s been a while since I’ve had a mind-cleansing weekend and it was much needed. I often forget that I need weekends where it’s just me and I lose myself in the world around me, paying attention to everything going on and taking time to stare up at the sky and watch the clouds like a little kid. Remember when you would lie in the grass as a kid and stare at the sky trying to figure out the shapes the clouds made?
I’ve been focusing on too many of the wrong things in life, like what’s wrong and lacking instead of what’s good, can be changed and the abundance I do have. Getting my happiness, health and vitality back in order are key in enduring the job I dislike and regaining focus where it counts. Bit by bit, I’m slowly refocusing on what I can change in my job to keep me happy in the meantime, such as how I can help my customers, and I’m focusing on activities that will give me a renewed sense of joy without spending in excess.
