What could make just about anyone do a happy money dance, without winning the lottery? Yep, you guessed it, passing an Uber Frugal Month challenge! While it was by no means a perfect month, it was my FIRST attempt at an Uber Frugal month and quite honestly, I did well.
There will be blips…
As with any challenge, it wouldn’t be a challenge without blips along the way. Those wonderful boulders that sit in the middle of the road, waiting for you to trip over them, falling face first into the nearest puddle.
Blip # 1 Entertainment: ITunes $19.98 spent on a movie and an album.
Blip # 2 Restaurants: $154 spent on outings. This is highly unusual for me but it happened. Thankfully, I was $32 under on my groceries so the net overage is $42.
Blip # 3 Shopping: I bought 1 piece of clothing…ACK! Not sure exactly what possessed me, but I felt the need to purchase one pair of Lulu lemon leggings for working out – $110. A far cry from the hundreds and thousands I was spending on shopping last year, but I’m still grumpy about it; a no spend challenge means NO SPENDING!!
January 2015 was my lowest spending month since January 2014! YIPPEEEEEE!
It has been an entire year since my spending was this low. One of my goals for quite some time has been to live on less and to keep my spending within my salary only and hold commissions for extra debt repayment – mission accomplished! Since some of the numbers are still coming in, I’ll do a full recap next week with all the fancy reports to show the spending percentages within each budget category.
One Not So Frugal Month – February 2015
Ah February, there’s nothing unusual about you aside from being a shortened 28 day month; which should be good, but for me, it’s “visit my parents vacation time”. And, and, and… yep, one of those months.
What’s making February expensive?
Education – I’m due to pay for the next round of courses towards my Writing and Marketing certificates that start in April – approx. $1500. Thankfully, I’ve dropped one course that was extremely boring and would be wasting my money.
Travel – Most of my vacation is paid for (or reward miles), but I still have: incidentals, groceries, gas for the rental car, airport parking for my car and boarding for my cat. I’m always peeved about the airport parking and boarding for my cat but I’ve got no one to help out unfortunately. I’m going to challenge myself to keep these $1000 and under if I can; the icky exchange rate is NOT going to help. Let’s see how Uber Frugal I can be!
Skincare – Blech. I wish I didn’t have to put anything on my skin, but with these dry Canadian winters my skin gets dehydrated quickly. Thankfully, the skincare routine I have only has to be replenished every six months to a year, which means only one month of higher than usual spending in this category. As a woman, I’m disgusted at how much things cost for skincare and makeup when you have allergies. I’ve tried the cheapy cheapy stuff, but end up breaking out or getting rashes – GAH!
The premise behind February will be to keep other budget categories as frugal as I can to compensate for the bleeding in these three areas. In all reality though, there’s no need to really whine about them as I have money set aside for everything in a savings account, it’s just going to make my spending look like a train wreck.
Do you have a month out of the year that’s a spending train wreck? What do you use for skincare? Should I mash up avocados and slather it on my skin instead?
Have an Uber Fab weekend!
