Accessories are a girl’s best friend. Funny enough, I’m not a huge accessory girl; I’m more minimalist when it comes to jewelry and accessories. I’m the classic, sophisticated Audrey Hepburn. Give me a pair of pearls, a simple necklace and some classy shades and I’m all-good. Don’t get me wrong, I know how to accessorize but I don’t overdo it.
Think of it this way, if the store window is over decorated, you wonder whether there’s anything upstairs worthwhile. If the store window is nicely decorated, simple and well thought out, you know there’s more than meets the eye. Throwing on every accessory you have just screams hey look at me, I may be pretty to look at but there’s nothing else going on except my need to compensate for a lack of character. Being low key with your accessories says, hey I know who I am; I’m only wearing this and screw you if you don’t like it. Like I said, I’m a minimalist accessory gal and overdoing it screams lack of character to me.
“You look like Sandra Bullock. You know from those movies where she’s an FBI agent. Can you show up tomorrow for volunteering in a suit and those shades? It’ll be perfect.” That was my co-volunteers assessment after I became the proud new owner of a pair of aviator style Maui Jims. This was also the prelude to my introduction to Bitchy Resting Face. While I was making one of my rounds, I had a rather serious face with my FBI-esque shades and was accused of having Bitchy Resting Face. My first reaction was “oh no” and a pout followed by a hearty bout of laughter. Who wouldn’t laugh after you’re told you looked a bit grumpy?
While I was at the Rogers Cup, I stopped by the Maui Jims booth for a look at what they had to offer. I already own two pairs of sunglasses so who knows what possessed me to buy a third. These were a lot different from what I currently own. I have a pair of Burberry’s and Dolce’s that are your standard plastic frame that end up sliding down your nose. Basic sunglasses not polarized. The Maui Jims are polarized and I must say are fabulous for the outdoors and driving, everything pops.
The pair I purchased are Cliffhouse; the frame is titanium and will be perfect for my trips to Hawaii and rounds of fun in the saltwater surf. Apparently, they are saltwater proof. We will see about that! They are however, not accident proof, so if I take a bad wave and/or get eaten by a shark, I am shit out of luck. Normally I shy away from aviator frames as they overwhelm my smaller face. These, however, have a smaller drop and are designed for a smaller face. They look super cool on, so I’m not complaining!
My original obsession with sunglasses came from a life of glasses wearing. I was forever doomed to the realm of tacky prescription sunglasses. If anyone has seen a +5.25 prescription, the lenses are rather thick and not conducive to sunglasses. Tacky! I was overjoyed when I was able to start wearing contact lenses and I immediately purchased a pair of Ray Ban polarized sunglasses that after about 5 years had to be put to rest.
Financial Wisdom I learned this week:
This article nails down my perspective and living situation all in one line: “Instead, become your own superhero by taking control of your finances, managing what you spend and making sure you are accumulating assets. “ It speaks to the growing number of people that are choosing to remain single and/or in a couple but childless. Being a single and paying for it all on your own is a challenge.
I think the title says it all! What I found interesting was the bullet point “Buying a home because its expected of you”. I am struggling with this dilemma at the moment, do I rent or do I buy? Ultimately, I am leaning towards renting because a house is too much of a cost for a single gal and I like to travel.
As I’m learning, planning for emergencies and getting the most out of your health insurance are two super important things in life. Funny their cat is trying to eat ceramic in the pic; my cat likes to try to eat whatever she can off the floor too.
Cait talks about the importance of blogging for those of us in debt. It keeps us accountable.
Time to go wash, wax and vacuum the car! Yes, I detail my own car. I have done it since I started driving, I have never had anyone detail my car for me. It’s a small savings but it’s also relaxing to me and gives me time to think. Strange, I know, but we all know I’m a goofy nerd sometimes.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend and see you on Monday!
