Today is the day I find my motivation again.
Today is the day I make a commitment to take action toward those things that make me unhappy.
Today is the day I realize I am not perfect and shit happens.
Today is the day I will ask for someone else’s help.
When is the last time you asked for help? Financially or otherwise?
Something that many of us struggle with, and inevitably causes us all a great deal of stress, is knowing when to ask for help. It could be something as simple as asking a financial adviser for advice on your investments, or seeking out a career counsellor to get your career back on track. We know we should do it, but still we don’t and try to go it on our own.
Help. That one word is a sign of weakness to many of us. For myself, it is a toxic brew, the perfectionist and part control freak in me wants and has to try to do everything on my own. This can be a recipe for disaster. It can take you down a road of nothing but banging your head on a wall. Help is not a swear word, it is a reminder that not one of us is an expert at everything.
Why am I writing about help?
It’s important to recognize and realize when you need to seek it out and that it is not by any means a sign of weakness. Seeking help in any area of your life is the sign of a strong individual, of someone who knows that in order to be successful, you sometimes have to rely on others to help you along the way.
This past week, I’ve been noticing a lack of motivation for everyday things in my life.
I always have a good barometer when it comes to motivation, passion, and generally feeling enthusiastic about everything and anything in life. I immediately know that something is wrong when I’m no longer feeling any kind of desire to do things I enjoy, like writing or photography.
When this happens, I take time to think about what has affected me and ultimately put me in a demotivated state of mind.
Which area of my life is affecting me the most?
After some careful thought and observation, I realized that my career could be in a better state than it is. This is an area of great struggle for me, on which path to take. In the end, all factors have pointed me in the direction of hiring a career coach. I know I can be doing things better, and quite possibly, something different altogether. I can do every test under the sun myself, but if I don’t have someone to guide me and help me analyze the results I’m no better off than a carpenter without a piece of wood to make furniture.
I think of it as removing the limitations, trying something new and changing my normal habits related to my career. The world is ever changing and if we don’t change our mindset and move along, we’ll get lost in the shuffle.
So, I’m sprouting wings, changing it up, taking action and moving myself to where I envision I should be. I’m off to hire a career coach and get things headed back in the right direction. When life becomes frustrating because what you’re doing day to day seems all wrong, usually it is and it’s time to fix things. My hope is to keep this adventure fairly low cost. It’s an unexpected expense and I don’t want it affecting my budget too dramatically. I’ll keep you updated on how things go!
You are only as successful as you allow yourself to be.
Today is the day….when is the last time you asked for help?
