I’m a thinker by nature. This can be a good thing and a bad thing. One negative thought can have you spiraling down the rabbit hole to self-doubt. Loathing is optional but on some days, it can go to that extreme. Changing your thinking is a choice. Switching from a negative thought pattern to a positive one is all you.
Once you make the choice to change your thoughts, it’s all uphill.
Of all the great thinkers, Marcus Aurelius has had a positive impact on my thinking. I highly recommend reading Meditations.
Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking.
It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live.
When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive – to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.
Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth.
See what I mean? Great guy, great thinking.
Positive thinking leads to an open mind and heart.
Positive thinking keeps you curious and changes your perspective. Success is not what you think. Climbing a ladder is not necessary. For years I believed that I had to be the VP of something and had to climb the corporate ladder to get there. What exactly was I aiming for? Security, financial success and achievement. But success comes in many forms and differs from person to person. Positive thinking opens new paths and removes the “traditional” thinking mindset.
You focus on abundance not lack. Humans tend to focus on what we don’t have. The unfortunate byproduct of negative thinking keeps us trapped in a state of lack. We’re always focusing on what’s next, there should be more, there has to be a better girlfriend/boyfriend out there, and so on. This thinking keeps us in a state of unhappiness and always searching for more. If we focus on what we have and on improving our mindset, life will never be dull and the longing goes away.
Stop whining and take action. Positive thinking removes the negative whining and focuses us on taking action. You’ve heard it many times, there’s never a good time to invest, you can’t time the stock market, and from my experience, it’s true. You simply have to take action and get started. Once you’re in, find your opportunities to rebalance your portfolio or reduce your average purchase price. Taking action moves you forward, whining keeps you stuck on the treadmill to nowhere.
Do the opposite of everyone else and love it. Now don’t get all crazy here and start walking around naked, that’s not what I’m getting at. Simply put, all I’m saying is be your own unique bad ass. You’re already different. Simply stop trying to fit in and conform. It doesn’t work. Believe me. You’ll spend years pedaling backward and getting nowhere. You’ll feel inauthentic and unfulfilled.
Positive Thinking Exercises to Move You Forward
How do you learn to be positive? How do you change the old negative money programming? It takes a bit of work, a choice to live a better life and perseverance, but you can do it. Yes, you’ll have your off days but that’s where perseverance comes in – catch the negative thought and replace it with a positive one.
Here are a few exercises I use to turn my thinking from upside down to right side up:
Practicing gratitude is my new personal fave and has led to the most results. Not only does it lead to a more positive outlook on life in general, it keeps you focusing on abundance. For the spenders out there, this means RESULTS. I no longer want to buy things. I believe what I have already is enough. I want less and feel I need less – less stuff, less food, less Starbucks outings.
How to do it: Take 5 minutes every morning and write out 10 things you’re grateful for. Like this: I’m truly happy and grateful for X because Y. Once you’ve written them out, read them out loud saying “Thank you, thank you, thank you” after each. Remember to feel each one, say it like you mean it, and believe how important it is to you.
Focus on the “I AM”. When I’m trying to achieve something or believe a bit more in myself (because we all deal with self-doubt no matter how happy we are), I’ll say affirmations in my mind or out loud. Here’s a few I use: I AM a writer, or I AM a photographer, or I AM peace. Bonus Tip: Say these while out on a walk to focus your mind.
Believe in the flow of life and that the universe, God, or another deity (whatever you believe in) has your back. My money mantra: Money flows to me freely and openly. I repeat this at least twice a day. Make sure you believe it, from the top of your head down to your toes.
This one is care of Gabrielle Bernstein who I’m a big fan of lately.
For those of you who think I may have gone all woo woo, here’s a thought:
When life hasn’t been working out the way you want, it’s time to change, to try something different. I’ve had time away from the normal stressors in life to reframe things. The clear choice was positive thinking.
