As luck would have it, not all of my banking was resolved as I like it to be before I go on vacation. I’m one of those super organized freaks of nature that has to have everything figured out before I leave. I’m also crazy about lists, so much so, I even remind myself to lock the door in the previously mentioned lists. It’s all that vacation excitement that leads to forgetting at least one thing after walking out the door.
So, as you can imagine, it was not my idea of a super fun time to sit on the phone with my financial institutions while on vacation. For this year’s vacation, I was given a big reminder of how important it is to carry ALL of your banking info. Even if you only do one transaction a month with an institution, carry the info! (Or, at least have access to it electronically)
Before I left, I had a problem with my credit card – they never received the payment. My glorious mind thought it would be a fantabulous idea to try and resolve it the day before I left. Yea – big mistake. I got the standard reply of “oh, it can take 3 -5 business days for a payment to process.” Great. Not what I wanted to hear.
What did this equal?
Taking 30 minutes yesterday morning to call both banks and open an investigation into the missing payment. The transfer from one bank to the other somehow mysteriously vanished.
TIP: Remember to ask your bank to waive your credit card interest charges if the investigation will go past your statement due date. They won’t do this unless you ask!
What banking info should I bring?
All debit/credit card numbers plus remember the three digits on the back! The “CVR” number as the banks call it. I don’t like bringing these numbers but some banks use it to validate your identity over the phone.
All 1-800 numbers for your banks unless you absolutely know you’ll have access to the internet or if it’s already on the back the card.
Remember the answers to your security questions!
Whatever you do, DO NOT write these numbers down in one place and please don’t put them in your suitcase!
We live in a wonderful world full of fancy smartphone apps and programs that can securely store your numbers for you. A few ideas:
Keepass password safe – this one’s FREE!
It’s been a week and a half since I made my credit card payment and it’s still mysteriously missing. It takes up to 5 days to complete the investigation, so I’m on pins and needles until the payment goes through.
If I hadn’t brought the one banks info that had some of the other banks info (did you get that?) I would have never been able to get this resolved as they wouldn’t have been able to prove my identity.
Next vacation I’ll be better prepared!
Have you travelled without your banking info? Did you end up needing it?
